Eagles Lose to Chiefs 7-0

The Surrey Eagles played the Chilliwack Chiefs for the second time in three days and while they kept up with the visiting team on Remembrance Day, it was ‘Friday the 13th’ that got the best of them.

Surrey goaltender Daniel Davidson was credited with the loss stopping a total of 10 shots, while Chilliwack’s Aiden Pelino stopped all 27 shots from the Eagles for his second shutout of the season.

After controlling the puck for the first five minutes, the Surrey Eagles took an unfortunate penalty that that led to the game’s first goal in favour of the visiting team. Kale Kane scored his fifth of the season, followed 48 seconds later by Mark Esposito’s slap shot to the far side of the net courtesy of a drop-back pass by Chiefs’ affiliate Ilijah Colina. Chilliwack would add their third of the game with five seconds remaining in the opening period and the Eagles were down 3-0 after 20 minutes.

The Chiefs came back strong in the second period and matched their lead after the first frame. Darien Craighead, Jordan Kawaguchi, and Jesse Lansdell ended the night for Daniel Davidson, who allowed six goals on 16 shots. Eagles’ back-up Forbes Ploszaj would take his place and would hold off the Chiefs until the end of 40 minutes; the score stood at 6-0.

The Eagles were able to create some chances in the final period of play, but Pelino would shut the door and Eric Benshadle would net his first of the season to propel the Chiefs to a 7-0 shutout.

Surrey’s record moves down to 4-19; Chilliwack ascends to 14-5-1-2.

Chilliwack swept the Three-Star honours with Aiden Pelino, Jordan Kawaguchi, and Darien Craighead getting first, second, and third respectively.

Eagles’ defenceman Owen Johnson played the puck along the back end with assertiveness and speed. He was rewarded with the Fortis BC Energy Player of the Game.

The Eagles will conclude their six-game home-stand at the South Surrey Arena with a clash against the Prince George Spruce Kings, who the Eagles have beaten at home back on September 20th. The game goes for Sunday afternoon at 4PM.
