Eagles Fall To Spruce Kings 4-2

The Surrey Eagles had the Prince George Spruce Kings on their toes, but a late-goal in the final minute would ultimately win the game for the visiting team.

Eagles’ goaltender Forbes Ploszaj halted 35 of 39 shots, but his team was only limited to 22 shots, putting two of them past Spruce Kings’ Liam McCloskey.

The tone of the game was set early with fists flying and words exchanged between both teams. The Spruce Kings however would get the first two goals of the game, including one on the power-play, and held a 2-0 lead after the first frame. Bryan Basilico and Jake Lebrun were the goal-scorers.

The second period showed some promising play for the Eagles taking control on the special teams when given the opportunity. Ty Westgard would secure his 20th point of the season with a rebound off of the pad of McCloskey, while Kurt Black netted his second as a Surrey Eagle off the backside of the Prince George goaltender. The home team had tied the game, but two minutes later, former Surrey Eagle Jordan Funk would put the bouncing puck through the legs of Ploszaj and regain the one-goal lead; Spruce Kings led 3-2 after 40.

Surrey looked to tie the game up in the final minute of the third period, pulling Ploszaj to the bench and sending an extra attacker. Prince George got the puck got out and on an unfortunate placing of the linesman, Darius Davidson was not able to get to the loose puck and Parker Colley grabbed the open cage for his first of the season. The goal would seal a 4-2 win for the Spruce Kings and extending the Eagles’ winning drought to 11 games.

Surrey’s record drops to 4-20; while Prince George snaps a five-game losing streak, improving to 6-16-0-2.

Surrey would be awarded two of the three stars of the game; Forbes Ploszaj was given the third star while Kurt Black was honoured with the second star for the multi-point game. PG’s captain Jake Lebrun recorded his own two-point night for the game’s first star.

Matt Brown rocked the boards deep in the offensive zone, earning him today’s Fortis BC Energy Player of the Game.
