Mackie Leads Eagles To Victory In Prince George

The Surrey Eagles faced the Prince George Spruce Kings for the second straight game on Saturday night, and walked away with their seventh victory of the season. Gage Mackie scored two goals, and Logan Mostat’s first BCHL marker in the third period ended up being the winner in a 4-3 game.

Defenceman Nick Azar opened the scoring late in the first period with his second goal of the season, on a shot from the point with Kurt Black screening the Prince George goaltender in front. The Spruce Kings would answer back quickly, just over three minutes later, with an unassisted goal by Parker Colley. Just before the first period ended, Mackie would score on a rebound in front of the net with only 39 seconds remaining for his eighth of the season – giving the Eagles a 2-1 lead.

Prince George opened the second period with a tying goal, and would take their first lead of the game with less than three minutes remaining. Mackie answered back for the Eagles with another goal in the final two minutes of a period, and tied the game 3-3 with his second goal of the game and ninth of the season. Mackie broke in on a partial breakaway and pulled off a beautiful drag move to fool Joseph McLeod, who was in goal for Prince George. The goal brings Mackie’s season total to nine on the season.

As emotions started to boil over in the third period, the line of Jeffrey Stewart, Gage Mackie, and Logan Mostat continued to buzz around the Prince George net. This time it was Mostat that was rewarded with his first BCHL goal, following up his own rebound at the side of the net. The Eagles would not relinquish the 4-3 lead, earning the victory after some key shot blocks by Tyler Cooper and captain Paul McAvoy on a late penalty kill.

Justin Laforest picked up his second win of the season, stopping 24 of the 27 shots that he faced in the game.

After splitting the two games in Prince George, the Eagles head back home for an afternoon game against the Coquitlam Express on Family Day. They will return to Prince George at the end of the month for their second two-game set of the season.
