Eagles and Spruce Kings Play to a 2-2 Tie

The Surrey Eagles returned to the nest for the first time in 2016 looking to find a win after losing their Interior Division road trip. They would tie the Prince George Spruce Kings 2-2, recording their second straight tie at the South Surrey Arena.

Eagles’ netminder Justin Laforest became the human highlight reel stopping two breakways during the game, stopping 63 of 65 total shots. Spruce Kings goaltender Liam McCloskey did an equal job as well halting 28 of 30 attempts.

Laforest was the catalyst in the opening period for the Eagles stopping all 18 shots from Prince George holding the game to a scoreless draw after 20 minutes.

Jaxon Joseph ignited the second period for the Eagles recording his first career BCHL goal at 46 seconds off a face-off win by Jeffrey Stewart. PG’s Tanner Campbell would regain the momentum for his squad on the power-play netting his fifth of the season with 69 seconds left in the frame.

As the Spruce Kings took control of the third period, Kurt Black and Donovan Ott waited until the final two and a half minutes of the final period to switch the gears. Black’s backhand pass through traffic to an open Ott found the open net to put the home team back up by one goal. However, the celebration was short-lived as Campbell got his second of the game to send the game into overtime. The extra two periods would solve nothing and the game would end in a 2-2 draw.

Surrey’s record becomes 5-31-0-2, while Prince George records their first tie and stand at 9-28-2-1.

Kurt Black’s amazing pass for the go-ahead goal was good enough for the game’s third star. Goaltenders Liam McCloskey and Justin Laforest stunning performances were rewarded with the second and first stars respectively.

Donovan Ott’s board play was as sweet as his goal and was named Fortis BC Energy Player of the Game.

Surrey will continue their four-game homestand on Sunday afternoon at 4PM with their second game against the Trail Smoke Eaters in eight days; it is also their final match-up of the 2015-16 season.
