EAGLES STRUGGLE TO SOLVE WALSH IN 2-1 LOSS TO LANGLEY

Langley, B.C.
Oct. 7, 2009

The Eagles couldn?t convert on ample scoring chances against the Langley Chiefs Wednesday night, and lost a 2-1 decision on the road. Key to the Eagles? headaches was Chiefs goalie, Andrew Walsh, who made 26 stops in the win.

The teams played it close to the vest in a tight-checking first period that yielded no scoring.

The Eagles opened the scoring in the second period on a lightning accurate wrist-shot by Manraj Hayer to the far side top corner. Chris Santiago led the rush 2-on-2 to set up the streaking Hayer.

Seconds later the Chiefs answered on a Max Fiedler wrist shot in the slot that beat Eagles keeper Vinny Lessard low blocker side, tying the game at one.

The Chiefs grabbed the lead halfway through the third period on a power play goal from sharpshooter Colton Beck. Beck drove along the goal line to the crease, jamming the puck behind Lessard for the game-winner.

Assistant coach, Matt Erhart, spoke about the loss.

?We had two or three breakaways, two or three two-on-ones; it?s a matter of our guys stepping up and being goal scorers,? said a frustrated Erhart.

?In the last few games, the goals have been there, but it?s a matter of doing it against teams in our division. Guys have got to pay the price to get in front of the net and get those greasy rebounds in the tough places to play.?

Erhart also recognized the outstanding play of Andrew Walsh, who was named the game?s first star.

?He?s played well against us all year,? said Erhart of the Chief?s keeper, ?and does a very good job. He made a couple of big saves tonight.?

Wednesday?s contest concludes 7 straight road games for the Eagles, in which they went 4-2-1. Still, Erhart refuses to blame the loss on a long string away from home.

?In this league you?ve got to win on the road and at home,? said Coach Erhart. ?You play 30 home, 30 away and it doesn?t matter when you play them, you just have to go out there and get the two points.?

The Eagles will try to do just that this Friday, Oct. 9, when they host the Chiefs.
