Volunteers Collect Nearly 250 Knapsacks For Surrey Students In Need

The Surrey community rallied on Sunday afternoon at South Surrey Arena, and collected 247 knapsacks filled with school supplies for local schoolchildren in need.

Every person that donated a knapsack received four tickets to a Surrey Eagles hockey game next season, and were also entered in a draw to win season tickets. Vendors were also on hand to give out free goodies like sweets by Neet’s Treats, homemade ice cream, new toothbrushes from PDG Dental, discounts from Lash Out Beauty Bar, and much more.

“Organizing has been ongoing for about a month,” said Nav Jagpal, who planned the event. “All of the vendors are volunteering their time, money, and effort. Everyone is out here to support the drive, including the Eagles.”

The highlight of the day was when a single donation of 48 knapsacks was made, but was then quickly topped by a donation of 56 bags by a member of the community. Pre-filled bags were also sold at the arena for 30 dollars each.

“The more bags we collect, the more kids we can help, and the more municipalities we can reach out to,” Jagpal explained. “I know a principal that works in the city, he contacts other principals in the city, and they give them to the children that have the greatest need.”

The event was a spectacular success, and was especially a hit with the children that showed up. Three clowns were on hand to keep them entertained with balloon animals, giant bubbles, and unicycle-riding. DJ Andy provided the music, and Eagles’ mascot Winger even made an appearance!

In all, it was a great experience for everyone that attended – and it went towards a great cause.

“It’s not like you’re just giving money, because nobody really knows where that goes,” Jagpal said. “Here, you know that whatever you are donating is going directly to school kids that really need it. You have to give back. It’s a good chance for everybody in the community to give back.”

“We’ll be back again next year, and hopefully collect even more!”
