Burnaby, B.C. – The Surrey Eagles (17-2-1) finished their 2021 Pod Season on Sunday afternoon, and the last result of their campaign was a dominant 5-1 victory against the Coquitlam Express (6-11-3). The win was Surrey’s 13th straight win on the season.
Eagles head coach Cam Keith was happy with the way his team finished off the season. “It was a great way for our graduating players to finish their careers.” Wil Kushnyryk, Holden Katzalay, and Tommy Scarfone played their final games of their junior career in the win. Kieran O’Hearn, Tyson McLean, and Jacob Piller graduated as well, but weren’t able to dress for the final game.
Kushnyryk scored in the win, Katzalay had 2 assists in the contest, and Scarfone made 17 saves for his 7th win in 9 starts. Christian Fitzgerald, Brandon Santa Juana, Brett Bliss, and Jimmy Darby were the other goal scorers for Surrey. Coquitlam’s Austin Fraser scored the lone goal from the Express.
For Keith, the development of this team was the main focus throughout the pod season. As the season wrapped up, the Eagles head coach was proud of the way his team improved. “This team never took steps backwards. We stumbled a few times but we managed to keep pushing forward.” The Eagles finished with at worst the 2nd best record of the BCHL’s pod season with 17 wins, and averaged 5 goals a game through the season.
As this season comes to a close, it’s already time to move forward to the 2021-22 season. Cam Keith is excited for what’s to come for this team moving forward. “This pod season allowed our younger players to establish themselves. Line chemistries were formed and therefore creates an additional level of excitement for next season.”
We’d like to thank our friends, family, and Eagles fans for all of their support throughout the 2021 pod season.
