Surrey Continues To Soar In Win Against Coquitlam

Burnaby, B.C. – The Surrey Eagles (10-2-1) continued their winning ways on Monday night, scoring another 3 powerplay goals in a 6-2 win against the Coquitlam Express (4-7-3). The win is Surrey’s 6th in a row as they continue to stay hot in the Coquitlam pod.

It was another night highlighted by a terrific effort on special teams in the eyes of Eagles head coach Cam Keith. “Our special teams were the difference makers again tonight. The penalty kill with [Kushnyrik] and McLean did a great job tonight.” On top of Surrey going 3 for 5 with the man advantage, the Eagles were a perfect 4 for 4 on the penalty kill.

The game started off well for the Express after Jackson Murphy-Johnson opened the scoring 4 minutes in. However, the Eagles responded 47 seconds later when Jacob Piller scored his 1st goal of the season. Jacob Slipec for Surrey and Tyler Schleppe for Coquitlam would trade goals later in the frame and it was 2-2 after the 1st period.

That was the closest the game would remain as the Eagles established a strong forecheck in the 2nd period. “All four lines were playing a heavy brand of hockey. We wore their defence down with puck protection in the hard areas.” The Eagles would score 4 unanswered goals in the final 40 minutes. Buddy Johnson, Christian Fitzgerald, and Tyson McLean all scored on the powerplay, and Michael Abgrall potted one of his own in the victory. Tommy Scarfone made 26 saves in the win.

Yet despite the 6 goals, Cam highlighted his team’s defensive effort in the way they were able to shut down the Express in the final 40 minutes. “Have to give credit to our d-core for blocking a lot of shots and making smart decisions with the puck.” Surrey limited Coquitlam to just 16 shots in the final 2 periods.

The Eagles are back at it on Wednesday night, as they’ll look for their 7th win in a row against the Powell River Kings. Puck drop is slated for 8:00 pm inside the Scotia Barn, and you can watch all the action live on BCHL TV (Powered by HockeyTV), and on mixlr.com/eaglesbchl.
