McKay’s First BCHL Goal Leads Eagles Over Spruce Kings In Prince George

The Surrey Eagles picked up two points on Saturday night with a 2-1 road win over the Prince George Spruce Kings. Eagles goaltender Hayden Missler, making his second start in as many days, stopped 39 shots in the victory.

The two teams combined for only six total goals in the two-game set, as the Spruce Kings won on Friday night by an identical 2-1 score. Missler was fantastic in the first game as well, stopping 32 of the 34 shots he faced, but was beaten by Dustin Manz for the game-winning goal with only 2:15 to go. Holden Katzalay tied the game late with a tip-in at the front of the net, but the Eagles were unfortunately unable to get the game into the extra frame.

Saturday night saw Manz score once again, opening the scoring, but the Eagles would answer only minutes later. Max Mohagen scored a powerplay goal, his fifth of the season, to tie the game with under two minutes remaining in the second period. Before the period would finish, it was Dawson McKay who scored his first career BCHL goal in only his second game with the team.

McKay started the play with a key shot-block in the defensive end, which sprung teammate Brayden Shaw on a partial break. With Shaw driving to the net, Spruce Kings goaltender Logan Neaton came rushing out to make a save. The puck came loose and sat in the crease, as McKay tapped it in to the open cage for what turned out to be the game winner.

The Eagles now return home for one final game before breaking for the holidays. They will face the Spruce Kings for the third straight game on Friday, December 21st on home ice. They return to action on January 4th as they will start the unofficial second half of the season with a trip to Trail and Salmon Arm.
