Eagles Hire Two New Development Coaches

The Surrey Eagles organization is pleased to announce the hirings of Terry Morrison and Ron Johnson to the team’s Minor Hockey Development Program. The hirings come in the midst of a busy off-season for the club. The newcomers will help with the BCHL team, but will also assist the development team with Cloverdale Minor Hockey’s On Ice Development program, the Jr. Eagles programs, and Summer & Winter Training programs.

Terry Morrison comes to the club while remaining the head coach of the PJHL’s Port Moody Panthers for the upcoming season. His experiences range from being a coach for Semiahmoo Minor Hockey, the North Shore Winter Club, and the Panthers. He’ll look to bring his knowledge to all of Surrey’s programs.

“What I’m excited about is being able to work with the program and help establish a map for the kids to have the most success.”

Terry is also excited to be working with his longtime friend Ron Johnson, who he speaks very highly of.

“Ron has kind of been my mentor, and I’ve gained vast amounts of knowledge from him. He works with the highest level of players and I’ve been able to gain from the fruits of that labour, so that’s kind of my foundation for individual skill development and team tactics.”

Ron Johnson rejoins the Eagles after being away from the team since the mid 1990s, along with coaching stops that include serving as head coach of the Panthers with Terry as his assistant, and being the owner of the Elite Hockey Shooters Training System. Ron’s direct approach is aided by a strong group of core values.

“I have to look to the future and where the game is evolving. I have to look at the course correction that needs to take place with these kids to get them on board with where the game will be in 5, 6, 7, 8, even 9 years.”

Johnson adds that he’s looking forward to “providing a little bit more guidance, and a little more directional influence in helping these kids become elite hockey players.”

Johnson reiterates Morrison’s excitement in continuing to work together.

“We’ve worked together in development for quite a while, and it’s because we have good symmetry. It’s easy for us to get on the same page and work together effectively.”

One of the biggest things both coaches value is making sure the students aren’t just good hockey players, but adaptable human beings as well.

“Kids need to understand they have to have diversification in life, like if a kid just tries to be a goal-scorer, he’ll be on a one-dimensional path. It’s the same in life, if you put all your eggs in one basket, you’ll find yourself limited. So they’ll need to explore all their options to grow as a person, be it educationally or career wise.”

The experience , values, skills, and knowledge Terry and Ron bring to the team are a key component in why General Manager Blaine Neufeld brought them in.

“We are very excited to add Terry & Ron to our development team. We are always thinking of ways to aid our big club, but these two bring such a diverse skill set where they can really round out our Minor Hockey Player Development as well. We anticipate that Terry and Ron will be heavily involved with Cloverdale Minor Development and the Jr. Eagles.”

Terry and Ron will begin in August with the Eagles Hockey Schools and Prep Camps for Cloverdale Minor Hockey. They’ll also be a part of our 2019 Eagles Fall camps, and for more information click the image below. Welcome to Surrey!
