3 Late Powerplay Goals Propel Surrey Over Powell River

Burnaby, B.C. – The Surrey Eagles (7-2-1) came back from a 3-0 deficit and overcame the Powell River Kings (4-5-1), and extended their winning streak to 3 games.

The Eagles fell behind after the Kings got goals from Josh Kagan, Adamo Santia, and Lex Friesen. Jacob Slipec scored late in the 2nd to give the Eagles some life, but their hard work paid off in the 3rd period. After starting the game 0 for 5 on the powerplay, the Eagles scored on their next 3 opportunities in the 3rd period to make it 4-3. Gabe Schovanek, Holden Katzalay, and Buddy Johnson got the powerplay tallies. Brandon Santa Juana added an empty netter during the last minute to put the game out of reach. Hunter Tarves got his 2nd career BCHL win, making 29 saves in the contest.

For Eagles head coach Cam Keith, it’s another impressive win for his team in a winning streak full of them. When asked about his initial thoughts on the victory, he praised his team’s resiliency yet again. “The guys keep positive in spite of the setbacks allowing us to be in a position to come back.” He added, “We used our special teams today to cultivate energy. The penalty kill came through when we needed it and the powerplay answered under pressure.” The Eagles’ powerplay finished the night 3 for 8 and held Powell River to one powerplay goal in their 8 opportunities.

Cam continued talking about the powerplay, which is now one of the best units in the BCHL. “Our powerplay is effective when we move pucks fast to create open lane shots. We wanted to spread them out and look for inside options like Buddy’s goal.”

The Eagles are back at it on Friday night when they’ll take on the Coquitlam Express. The game is slated for a 7:30 pm start time inside the Scotia Barn. You can watch the game live on BCHL TV (Powered by HockeyTV) and on mixlr.com/eaglesbchl.
