New York Islanders Sign Former Eagles’ Defenceman Devon Toews

The New York Islanders have signed former Surrey Eagles defenceman Devon Toews to an entry-level contract. Toews has spent the last three seasons playing for the Quinnipiac University Bobcats, where he recorded 12 goals and 55 assists in 108 games. He was an integral part of the Bobcats team that made it to the National Championship game earlier this month.

The 22-year-old Toews was an anchor at the back end for the Surrey Eagles during the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons. His storied BCHL career was capped off with a Fred Page cup victory in 2013. In total, he posted 17 goals and 59 assists in 102 games with the Eagles franchise.

His entry-level contract with the Islanders is for three years, and he will begin his professional career next season. He was originally drafted by the team in the 4th round of the 2014 NHL entry draft, 108th overall.

Toews hails from Abbotsford, British Columbia. He began his junior career in 2010-11 on a brief stint with the Junior ‘B’ Abbotsford Pilots before making his way to the Eagles. Standing at 6-foot-1, 174 pounds, Toews is seen as an adept playmaker and puck moving defenceman who should be able to help out the Islanders in the near future.

The entire Surrey Eagles organization is proud to call Devon Toews an alumnus, and wishes him the best in the future!
