Jan. 16, 2010 Surrey, B.C. It was the proverbial four-point game and a chance for the Surrey Eagles to leap frog the Langley Chiefs in the Coastal Conference standings, but the Eagles came up short in a 3-1 loss to the Chiefs.
The Eagles hit the scoreboard first when Andrew Wallace got his stick on a Richard Vanderhoek slapshot from the point. Wallace tipped the puck past Wyatt Galley to take the lead, but scoring was hard to come by after that.
The Chiefs went on to score three unanswered goals. Mac Roy scored the game winner when he pounced on a puck that squirted free into the slot in front of Vinny Lessard.
In the third period, the Eagles gave up a short-handed goal to seal the deal. Josh Myers chipped the puck over Riley Sweeney’s shoulder into the Surrey zone, picked it up, and deked Lessard, scoring on the forehand.
Eagles’ forwards, Grant Toulmin and Jason Grecica, let out some emotion towards the end of the game and let the Chiefs know they weren’t taking the loss lying down. But overall it was a tough night for Surrey, who were coming off a promising and dominant win over the Burnaby Express the night before.
The win is Langley’s 12th in a row, putting them in third place in the Coastal Conference. On the other end, the loss leaves the Eagles in fifth place, three points behind Langley and one point behind the fourth place Victoria Grizzlies.
The Eagles’ next home game is Sunday, January 17 versus the Merritt Centennials. Puck drop is at 4:00pm at the South Surrey Arena. Tickets are available at the Eagles box office or by calling 604-531-GOAL (4625). Eagles game broadcasts are available at www.bchl.ca .
