The Surrey Eagles are pleased to announce that Kurt Black has committed to St. Norbert College, a NCAA Division III school in De Pere, Wisconsin. Black led the team in points last season, finishing the year with 19 goals and 25 assists in 51 games. He was acquired on November 5th, 2015 from the Trail Smoke Eaters. For his BCHL career, Black recorded 47 goals and 66 assists in 165 games.
The 6-foot-1 native of Winfield, British Columbia is a smooth skater, who possesses breakaway speed, and is always dangerous on the ice. Even though he is an offensive player, he is reliable defensively and plays a smart, two-way game. Black was one of only two 20-year-olds on the roster, and took on a leadership role with the team.
The St. Norbert College Green Knights are coached by former BCHLer Tim Coghlin, and have appeared in 16 NCAA Division III Tournaments since 1997. They have won the national championship four times in their history – 2008, 2011, 2012 and 2014. They finished second in their conference last season with a record of 25-4-2.
“We are extremely excited to have Kurt aboard our program,” said St. Norbert associate coach A.J. Aitken. “We believe he will be an impact player on the ice and in the classroom.”
Black is the third Eagles player to commit to a college in less than a month, joining teammates Paul McAvoy and Jeff Stewart – who both committed to Colgate University.
